What is FTO?
FTO can be considered the ‘fat gene’. The variants of this gene could indicate increased appetite, cravings for high-calorie food or having a greater risk of becoming overweight or obese.
Studies have shown that those who carry the A risk gene are often found to eat more and have a larger appetite as they have a greater activity of ‘ghrelin’ which is a hormone which controls the body’s hunger.
How is this used?
Carrying this ‘A risk gene’ does not put you at a disadvantage, in reality it gives you a greater understanding of your body and what it needs which can be used to great effect within a nutrition and coaching package. Knowing this trait can allow both the coach and nutritionist to give you a completely personalised package which is realistic to your body’s demands and needs.
There are serval different factors which will mean that those with the inheriting risk alleles of the FTO gene won’t necessarily become overweight. The environment, lifestyle and culture will play a massive part on the risk of weight gain. Those with a healthy lifestyle that eat a balanced diet and have an adequate amount of physical activity will mitigate the genetic risk of weight gain.
Therefore, a well-constructed training and nutritional plan will overcome your risk of obesity. Training done for a long steady duration will help to burn fat and increase your endurance whereas high intensity interval training (HIIT) can help burn a significant amount of calories in a short amount of time.
